Black S. African village gets eviction reprieve
Black villagers facing government eviction from their traditional lands got at least a day's reprieve. The lawyer for the villagers said senior government officials had agreed to put off forcing the people to leave until at least today , while discussing alternate arrangements. But government-run television said the eviction was postponed to Wednesday night.
In Washington, the State Department said it deplored the removal of blacks from their villages. Over the past 30 years, 3.5 million South African blacks have been forcibly removed from areas declared for whites only.
