Mideast envoy in Cairo to discuss US-Israeli pact

US special envoy Donald Rumsfeld arrived in Cairo Sunday for talks with President Hosni Mubarak on Washington's recent strategic cooperation pact with Israel. Mr. Mubarak has attacked the pact as an obstacle to Middle East peace.

Diplomatic sources said Mr. Rumsfeld would also discuss a new US military aid package to Egypt. The package, still to be approved by Congress, would give Egypt $1.1 billion in free military aid in 1985. An Egyptian spokesman said the increased aid, announced Friday, had no connection with the US-Israeli pact, which prompted Egyptian opposition groups to call for closer Egyptian-Soviet relations.
