China reassures scientists on their research freedom

Unusually liberal guidelines were issued Saturday to China's scientists, encouraging them to discuss scientific problems freely and to study the findings of foreign colleagues without political interference.

The new guidelines are the latest indication that the campaign aimed at reducing Western influence is being curbed, partly because it has sapped the morale of scientists who are vital to China's modernization drive.
