Jackson to visit Syria on behalf of downed pilot
The White House warned Democratic presidential hopeful Jesse Jackson against politicizing the case of a Navy flier being held by Syria after Jackson announced he would travel to Syria tomorrow to seek the pilot's release.
A White House spokesman insisted Sunday the administration is pressing for the release of Lt. Robert Goodman despite Jackson's suggestions to the contrary. Goodman was shot down over Syrian-held territory in Lebanon Dec. 4.
Jackson said he received a telegram on Christmas Eve from Syrian Ambassador Rafic Jouejati that said he would be allowed to travel to Syria with a delegation of his choosing. Jackson said he would travel with other American clergy.
