South Africa in Angola to rout Namibian nationalists

South Africa appears to have launched a major operation inside Angola to knock out bases of Namibian (South-West African) nationalist guerrillas, military analysts said Monday.

Following word from South African Defense Force Chief Constand Viljoen that his forces were engaged in a limited campaign in Angola against guerrillas of the South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), Angola said Monday that South African troops had mounted a large operation throughout the south of the country.

Angolan officials said the South African troops had occupied the town of Cassinga, more than 135 miles inside the border, using three motorized brigades, four artillery groups, and 100 aircraft.
