East Lebanon pounded by Israeli warplanes

Waves of Israeli jets hammered suspected guerrilla bases in eastern Lebanon for the second straight day Wednesday, hitting a Palestinian refugee camp and a marketplace; killing nearly 100 men, women, and children; and wounding 400, Beirut Radio said. Scores of homes and stores were set afire.

Local residents said the raid consisted of repeated dive-bomber strikes and was the ''most savage'' ever launched by the Israelis against targets in Syrian-controlled eastern Lebanon.

Israel said it was aiming at bases used by Iranian-backed guerrillas for operations against Israel.
