Pravda runs rare report on industrial pollution

Heavy industrial pollution is killing off thousands of acres of forest around the Soviet carmaking town of Togliatti, the Communist Party daily Pravda said in a rare report on the environment Thursday.

It said a ''bitter smoke'' hung permanently over the hills and woodlands around the industrial center on the Volga River, and it suggested ecological damage would soon create a wasteland there.

Pravda made clear its report was part of a new approach in response to a demand from President Yuri Andropov last month that industries pay more attention to pollution control.
