Poles say 1,120 dissidents accepted amnesty offer

Polish authorities say 1,120 dissident activists surrendered under last year's political amnesty. Government spokesman Jerzy Urban told a news conference Wednesday, ''The number of members of the opposition still living in hiding is now very small, less than 100,'' following the 51/2-month amnesty, which expired Dec. 31.

''As a result of the level of surrenders, we believe the underground has been seriously weakened. Its leaders are like generals without an army,'' Mr. Urban said.
