News policy on actions by military sought by US

As a result of the stinging criticsm that resulted from the decision to bar the news media from the invasion of Grenada, the Pentagon is developing a plan for dealing with news coverage of future military operations.

The study will try to determine ''how we might be able to accommodate the media and still maintain security for the mission and not jeopardize the lives of soldiers,'' said Pentagon spokesman Michael Burch.

Mr. Burch expressed sympathy with the media's position but emphasized the need to protect the operational details of a military mission in an era when TV can transmit pictures live via satellite from the battlefield.
