Rebel troops in Chad score on French jet with missile

A French Air Force Jaguar jet was hit by a missile and its pilot killed in Chad Wednesday, the Defense Ministry in Paris said. A ministry communique saida group of Jaguars intervened after a Chad government position at Ziguey had been attacked by rebel troops by some 20 armored vehicles. The post lies south of a defensive line drawn by French forces supporting the government of President Hissein Habre.

The rebel offensive marked the first time since last summer that Libyan-backed guerrillas had dared to cross the ''red line'' of French forces guarding the southern half of Chad.

Military sources said the clash was the first involving French forces in its former central African colony.
