Kenya accused of applying genocide with Somali clan

Two Kenyan parliamentarians accused Kenyan authorities Thursday of carrying out genocide against a clan of ethnic Somalis in the north of the country. In a letter to Hassan Mohamed, a minister of state in the office of President Daniel arap Moi, the officials said many people had been shot or burned to death on the orders of the district commissioner of Wajir, in the northeastern province.

One of the parliamentarians, Abdi Khalif, told reporters the campaign was being carried out under the guise of stamping out banditry. He said he had personally seen four people killed.

There was no independent confirmation of the allegations.
