Turkey asked to explain deaths in military prison

Amnesty International called on Turkey Thursday to account for seven people reported to have died in a military prison in eastern Turkey. The London-based human rights group said in a statement that it had urged Gen. Necdet Urug, Turkey's chief of general staff, to account publicly for the seven prisoners, who were reported to have died last month in Diyarbakir military prison.

Amnesty said it had also expressed concern to the general about reports and frequent complaints of torture and ill-treatment of inmates of the prison.

An Amnesty representative said the group had repeatedly urged Turkish authorities to investigate the allegations and take all necessary steps to halt the torture.
