Regional riots in Nigeria produce fatalities, arrests

Authorities arrested 40 people in the northeastern city of Yola after radical Muslims killed at least 60 in an indiscriminate massacre, news reports from Gongola State said Tuesday.

The riot occurred Monday in an open-air market in Yola, the Gongola capital, 650 miles northeast of Lagos.

The rioters were not officially identified, but news reports from Yola said they were believed to be followers of Al-Hajji Muhammadu Naitasene, a Muslim leader killed in similar religious rioting in northern Kano State three years ago.
