Classical Dvorak, Antonin: Symphony No. 9 in E minor, op. 95, "From the New World." "Carnival" Overture, op. 92. Vienne Philharmonic, Lorin Maazel, conductor. (Deutsche Grammophon digital 2532 079) -- Lorin Maazel seems to be enjoying a renaissance in his career. His earlier recording career came to a head during the glory years of analog stereo -- magnificent performances of various repertoire with the Vienna Philharmonic; recordings such as this "New World" symphony show that he is back in form. Other performances find more warmth, or more majesty, but Maazel makes a bewitching statement in this work. His reading of the "Carnival" overture is ebullient and exciting. The sound is spectacular throughout.
