Kirkpatrick's closest assistant to leave UN

Ambassador Charles M. Lichenstein, who has served for the last three years as Ambassador Jeane Kirpatrick's right hand man and closest assistant at the US Mission to the UN, has announced that he is leaving his post this week to become a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation - a conservative think tank, Monitor special correspondent Louis Wiznitzer reports.

Ambassador Lichenstein made headlines last fall when he remarked that if the UN were to leave New York, ''The members of the US Mission . . . will be down at dockside waving you a fond farewell as you sail into the sunset.''
