Marxist-led Ethiopia ousts two Soviets on spy charges

Marxist-ruled Ethiopia has expelled two Soviet diplomats on spy charges less than a month after breaking up an alleged US spy ring and expelling four Americans, Western diplomatic sources said Wednesday. The sources said the two unidentified Soviet diplomats had been ordered out in late February.

The diplomats had been suspected of working for the KGB secret police and trying to undermine the stability of the Marxist government of Col. Mengistu Haile-Mariam, the sources said.

But the sources said the expulsions did not signify a major shift in relations between the Soviet Union and Ethiopia, one of its closest allies in Africa.
