The end of Ustinov's six-day visit to India, the region's strongest military power, coincided with the arrival in neighboring Pakistan of six US F-16 jet fighters.

Washington has promised to furnish Pakistan with 40 of the aircraft in a $3.2 billion military and economic aid pact to counter the Soviet presence in Afghanistan.
