Ghana puts down 5th coup attempt against Rawlings

At least 11 rebels were killed in a coup attempt in Ghana, Accra Radio reported Sunday. The casualty figure is expected to rise. Fighting broke out Friday when rebels infiltrated from abroad in the fifth organized attempt to overthrow Flight Lt. Jerry Rawlings, said the radio, monitored in Abidjan.

The government has extended a curfew already in force, confined all troops to barracks, and militias have set up road blocks to stop rebels from escaping the country, the radio said.

The three rebels executed Saturday and the one killed Friday were former soldiers who had taken part in an abortive coup last June, it said.
