British aide in Athens slain by terrorist

A British diplomat was shot and killed Wednesday in his car in central Athens by an unknown gunman, police sources said. The attack came just two days before Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger is due to visit Athens and amid reports police were hunting a Palestinian and two Iranians believed to be plotting to assassinate the US ambassador to Greece.

Police sources said Kenneth T. Whitty was shot in his car near the British Embassy by a young man who was apparently an Arab. They said one of three women in the car with him was also shot and seriously injured.
