Attorney General will stay until successor confirmed
President Reagan vowed full cooperation Tuesday with a special investigation of Edwin Meese and won a promise from Attorney General William French Smith to stay on the job until his successor is confirmed.
Mr. Smith's agreement to stay was announced at the White House just hours after Mr. Reagan declared a blanket ''no comment'' policy on the controversy over Meese, his choice to replace Smith as the top official at the Justice Department.
A three-judge panel named Washington lawyer Jacob Stein Monday as independent counsel to conduct the inquiry into charges against Meese. Stein is the fourth independent counsel appointed under the post-Watergate Ethics in Government Act.
