Fishing boat strikes mine and sinks, Nicaragua says

The Nicaraguan Defense Ministry said the Pedro Arauz, part of a state-owned fishing fleet, detonated a mine early Wednesday near the Pacific port of Corinto , some 60 miles northwest of Managua.

The ministry said the boat sank after rescue efforts to tow it to shore failed. It reported four crew members were injured.

Both the United States and rebels have said that the CIA-backed minings had ended. It was not known whether the mine that was struck Wednesday was planted earlier or was part of a new sabotage operation.
