Panama's President urges speed in counting votes

President Jorge Illueca called for a speedup in vote counting in Panama's presidential elections Tuesday, blaming delays for the violence between rival party supporters in which one person was killed and 41 were wounded.

Two days hours after voting closed, only five of the 40 electoral districts had been tabulated. An electoral official said the slow counting was due to a laborious system of checks.

Arnulfo Arias Madrid, the main opposition candidate in Panama's presidential election, asserted Tuesday that the military has engineered a coup to block him from victory.
