Police in west India try to end Muslm-Hindu riots
Three days of Hindu-Muslim riots have claimed 75 lives in Maharashtra State in western India, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported Sunday. Heavily armed police patrolled the tense city of Bombay Sunday morning. Police, ordered to shoot rioters and arsonists on sight, said they had made 1, 500 arrests so far to try to curb the unrest. About 6,000 people have been evacuated from 1,200 burned-out homes in Bombay, the nearby industrial town of Bhiwandi and the surrounding district of Thane, they added.
A curfew was clamped on six districts of Bombay, the state capital, after religious feuding spilled over from neighboring areas, PTI said. It described the disorders as the worst recorded in Maharashtra State.
