Eagleton says he'll retire from the Senate in 1986

Thomas Eagleton, a three-term Democratic senator from Missouri, said Monday he will not seek reelection when his current term expires in 1986. Senator Eagleton said he will have spent 30 years in public office by the time he is out of the Senate. He said he wants to devote time to the law, teaching, and writing.

The Democratic nominating convention that picked George McGovern as the party's 1972 presidential candidate chose Mr. Eagleton as his running mate. But Eagleton was replaced by R. Sargent Shriver after it was disclosed the Missourian had undergone treatment for mental illness.
