Uruguay's police arrest key opposition leader

Uruguay's military government Saturday arrested Blanco Party leader Wilson Ferreira Aldunate as he returned home after 11 years in exile. Mr. Ferreira, who has been chosen his party's candidate for president in November elections, planned to meet thousands of supporters when he returned Saturday. The government had banned welcome demonstrations and made it clear that Ferreira would be arrested if he returned.

Ferreira's son Juan Raul was also arrested. The two are accused of collaborating with subversives in Uruguay in the 1970s. The family left the country in 1973 when a military coup ousted the democratic government.
