Israel bars militant party from July 23 elections

Pointing to the lessons of Germany's Weimar Republic, Israel's Central Elections Committee voted 18 to 10 to ban a party headed by US-born Rabbi Meir Kahane from the July 23 national elections. Rabbi Kahane has said he would appeal to the Supreme Court, Monitor contributor Abraham Rabinovich reports.

Rabbi Kahane, the founder of the Jewish Defense League, advocates expulsion of Arabs from Israel and destruction of the mosques on the temple mount.

The Central Elections Committee ruled Sunday night that Kahane's Kach party was a racist and anti-democratic body that opposed the basic values of the state.

''The Weimar Republic (displaced by the Nazis) fell because it let elements like Kahane use the tools of democracy to destroy democracy,'' said Knesset member Shulamit Aloni, a member of the committee.
