Jackson, in Panama, meets Salvadorean rebels

Democratic presidential contender Jesse Jackson, on a tour of Central America , held talks Sunday with left-wing Salvadorean guerrillas. He met representatives of the Faribundo Marti National Liberation Front in his hotel. The group is fighting the US-backed government of El Salvador.

On Saturday night, Mr. Jackson said the United States and Cuba must immediately establish diplomatic relations and work for the demilitarization of Central America. Jackson visits Cuba later this week.

Jackson's first official meeting in Panama was with President Jorge Illueca at the ornate presidential palace on the Bay of Panama. Jackson later met with President-elect Nicolas Barletta, who is scheduled to take office in October.
