Poland plans an amnesty of political prisoners

The government announced Tuesday it was preparing an amnesty for political prisoners to mark the 40th anniversary of communist Poland, but said the trial of four prominent dissidents will continue.

The plan will be submitted to parliament for ratification before the anniversary next Tuesday, government spokesman Jerzy Urban told a news conference.

He refused to say if the four leaders of the outlawed Workers Defense Committee will be covered by the amnesty. He also did not comment on whether those released must promise to abstain from political activity.
