South Pacific premier urges step-up against French A-tests

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Michael Somare, speaking at the opening of a regional meeting of Commonwealth heads of government, called on nations in the region to put increased pressure on France to end nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific. He tied the issue to France's continued colonial administration of the Pacific island of New Caledonia. France plans to give autonomy in internal affairs to the island, leading to self-determination in 1989.
