Nonproliferation A-treaty defended by US as nonbiased

The United States defended the 1970 nuclear nonproliferation treaty at the 40 -nation Geneva disarmament conference Tuesday against third-world criticism that the treaty was discriminatory. The pact bars nuclear powers from passing atomic weapons to other states, which in turn pledge not to manufacture nuclear arms or to obtain them elsewhere.

Countries that have not yet joined the 124-member accord include Argentina, Brazil, China, France, India, Israel, Pakistan, and South Africa.
