Polish leaders appear on TV in peace gesture toward union

With the fourth anniversary of Solidarity just days away, Polish leaders made an unusual joint appearance Tuesday on television with former members of the union, saying the government did not oppose the labor movement until it endangered the country's economy.

The unprecedented broadcast was seen as a move to temper calls for demonstrations to mark the anniversary and to call for reinstatement of the union, formed Aug. 31, 1980.
