Troops patrol Hyderbad to avert rioting after clashes

Army troops with orders to shoot rioters on sight patrolled the southern city of Hyderabad Monday after Hindu-Muslim clashes in which seven people were killed and 130 wounded.

In the northern state of Punjab, authorities arrested more than 1,250 farmers , forcing cancellation of an antigovernment rally Monday. The rally had been called to protest economic policy, but the government claimed militant members of Punjab's Sikh minority might try to exploit the protest.
