Barrel of A-matter recovered from ship; tighter rules urged

The first barrel of nuclear material from the wrecked French freighter Mont Louis was recovered Thursday, a spokesman for the environmental group Greenpeace said.

In Strasbourg, the European Parliament met in an emergency session and called for firmer rules on transporting dangerous materials. It urged the European Commission to compile a set of rules for member states regulating the transport of dangerous and radioactive waste. It demanded that the Commission reveal what steps it had taken to control the transport of radioactive material after parliamentary demands made in 1981.
