JAZZ ''Ten Gallon Shuffle,'' Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra, featuring Lew Tabackin. (Ascent ASC-1004.) - The Akiyoshi aggregation not only has a new name (formerly, it was the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band), but it actually is a new band. Pianist-composer Akiyoshi and her husband, saxophonist Lew Tabackin, moved to New York a couple of years ago from L.A. and reformed the band. This is their recording debut.

And what a band! It fairly bursts with vibrant energy - the sections, especially the saxes, are tighter and cleaner than ever (no mean feat, considering the fiendish difficulty of Akiyoshi's writing). The soloists are outstanding.

Akiyoshi has contributed a wealth of new music for this date, including ''Fading Beauty,'' a sinuous, Ellingtonesque melody written for and beautifully executed by alto saxophonist Frank Wess. Her up-tempo ''Jamming at Carnegie Hall'' features a typically boppish Akiyoshi piano introduction to a cooking ensemble section - and a series of fine solos from the band. ''Blue Dream,'' the longest piece on the album, opens with Tabackin's flute over a pulsating, floating background that picks up tempo for a fiery solo by alto saxophonist Jim Snidero, underpinned by stunning, oblique chords from Toshiko's piano. Akiyoshi's writing is full of color and dark warmth, and Tabackin puts forth here in his usual masterful fashion, feet planted in the jazz tradition, while his head explores other realms.
