Salvador Army begins sweep; rebels seek to halt transport

The Salvadorean Army began an antiguerrilla sweep Thursday while left-wing rebels called for a nationwide transport stoppage, setting the scene for the first major clashes since last Monday's peace talks.

The talks were the first in five years of civil war. Both sides have since said their positions have not changed. US military aid to the government was the principal obstacle, the guerrillas said in a statement on the talks broadcast by Venceremos, the rebel radio.
