West Germany's Schmidt advocates nuclear freeze
Former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who broke with his Social Democratic Party (SPD) over its rejection of new US nuclear missile deployments in Western Europe, has joined the movement for an immediate nuclear arms freeze, an SPD spokesman said Friday.
The spokesman confirmed Mr. Schmidt was among 150 members of Parliament who signed an initiative by the group Parliamentarians For World Order, which advocates a freeze.
