Finish line finds Mondale, Ferraro ignoring the polls

Walter F. Mondale closed out his quest for the White House yesterday, insisting to the end that the pollsters are wrong and that he will pull off a political upset bigger than Harry S. Truman's victory in 1948. ''I can feel it, we're going to win it and put a people's president in the White House,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Geraldine Ferraro opened the last day of her historic campaign for the vice-presidency declaring, ''If we want a caring and a strong leadership for America, I say the time has come to stand up and fight for Fritz Mondale.'' At a senior citizens' center in Brooklyn Heights, Ohio, she said, ''Let's send Ronald Reagan back to the ranch to collect social security and not leave him in Washington to cut social security.''
