Some progress seen in session on Israeli exit from LebanonPoland quits UN labor group over report on union abuses

Poland has withdrawn from the International Labor Organization because the UN agency took note of a report condemning alleged trade union abuses in Poland, a Polish official said Monday. The document said Poland had infringed workers' rights by suppressing the Solidarity free trade union after the imposition of martial law in December of 1981.

Poland had protested the formation of a special ILO commission in June 1983 to investigate labor conditions in Poland and suspended its participation in the agency. The commission was barred from visiting Poland and based its report on evidence collected in the West.
