Dalai Lama could visit Tibet but not live there, China says

China published its terms Wednesday for the return of Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, saying he could visit his mountain homeland. But it indicated he would not be allowed to live there. The document published in the official New China News Agency (NCNA) said there should be no more arguing about the events of 1959, when the Dalai Lama fled to India after an abortive rebellion in Tibet against Chinese rule.

The document made clear that if the Tibetan Buddhist leader were to return, he would have to support the unification of Tibet with the rest of China.
