Ethiopians fleeing famine streaming into the Sudan

About 47,000 people fleeing famine in Ethiopia have arrived in drought-stricken parts of eastern Sudan in the past four weeks, and 50,000 more are reported on the march, a spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Tuesday. In recent weeks 150,00 Chadian refugees have also arrived in Sudan to escape drought and war in their own country. The spokesman said the food situation in eastern Sudan was critical and UNHCR expects no fresh supplies until the end of January.
