US votes against human rights resolution critical of Chile

The United States called Friday night for an end to ''harsh repression'' in Chile, but refused to join the UN majority in a resolution formally censuring that Latin American country for human rights abuses.

Ambassador Richard Schifter, an alternate US delegate, accused the world body of continuing to apply ''double standards'' by singling out Chile, El Salvador, and Guatemala for special scrutiny while ignoring ''the worst violations in this hemisphere which take place in Fidel Castro's Cuba.
