US personnel office says it's salary cuts or 125,000 jobs

The Office of Personnel Management, boss to 2.1 million civil servants, is considering a proposal to abolish 125,000 jobs if Congress does not approve President Reagan's plan to cut federal salaries 5 percent across the board.

OPM spokesman Patrick Korten said that ''federal employees are probably overpaid.'' The average white-collar federal worker earns about $25,000 a year, and the average blue-collar worker get about $23,500 to $24,000, he said.
