Ohio governor against sending Guard to Honduras

Gov. Richard Celeste says his recent trip to Central America bolstered his opposition to sending Ohio National Guard troops to Honduras. Mr. Celeste has opposed sending three Ohio units to work on a road-building exercise next year in Honduras because that country borders Nicaragua.

The governor also opposes a recent federal law known as the Montgomery amendment that says governors cannot withhold permission for their National Guard units to go on training missions.

According to Celeste, ``The exercise is not unique in its training value.'' He also says his visit confirmed that the exercise is not essential to strong relations between the United States and Honduras.
