WORTH NOTING ON TV

This guide is designed to alert readers to the scope and variety of programming coming up. Listing is not meant to represent blanket endorsement. Viewers are urged to be selective. FRIDAY Cathy's Last Resort (CBS, 8:30-9 p.m.): Further adventures of the popular comic-strip character who many women feel represents their own struggles. This animated special was created by Cathy's print cartoonist, Cathy Guisewite, called one of America's 25 most influential women by the World Almanac and Book of Facts.

SATURDAY Wonderworks (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Second and last part of ``Necessary Parties,'' about a boy who takes his divorce-bound parents to court.

SUNDAY War and Remembrance (ABC, 8-11 p.m.): Premi`ere episode of a large-scale World War II miniseries based on the Herman Wouk novel. (See preview at right.) Back to the Future (NBC, 8:30-11 p.m.): ``Sunday Night at the Movies'' offers the network TV debut of this box office hit starring Michael J. Fox in a sci-fi comedy about a high school boy who goes back 30 years in a time machine. Nature (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): The distinguished series begins a new season with the first of six episodes on ``The Nature of Australia: A Portrait of the Island Continent.'' Tonight's show - ``A Separate Creation'' - looks at geology and evolution.

MONDAY American Agenda (ABC, 6:30 p.m., Eastern time; check local listings): With this program, the network's nightly news will start a long-term look at major domestic issues - family, environment, health, education, money, and drug abuse - with 12 correspondents specifically assigned to keep an eye on them.

TUESDAY War and Remembrance (ABC, 8-11 p.m.): Continuation of the Herman Wouk story. The American Experience (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): ``Kennedy vs. Wallace: A Crisis Up Close'' takes a documentary look at the historic conflicts that occurred during the integration of the University of Alabama in June 1963. David Goldblatt in Black and White (PBS, 10-11 p.m.): Goldblatt, a South African, has been photographing the people of his country for about 30 years, and talks about the results.

WEDNESDAY War and Remembrance (ABC, 8:30-11 p.m.): More of the sweeping Wouk story. Mexico (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): First of three programs exploring the forces that shaped modern Mexico - told exclusively by Mexicans themselves.

THURSDAY War and Remembrance (ABC, 9-11 p.m.): Still more - and it continues next week.
