HOOVER SPEEDS TO NEW YORK TO HURRY AID TO FINNS

Former President Hoover, national chairman of the Finnish Relief Fund Inc., was en route today to New York from California to speed distribution of relief to the civilian population of Finland, a task made urgent by evacuation in sub-zero weather of large numbers of persons from Helsingfors and other cities. Mr. Hoover, who has been organizing fund-raising activities on the West Coast, met Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia, head of the New York Chapter, in Chicago today from whence they will return to this city together. En route they will discuss the problems of the local chapters. . . .

Large and small contributions pouring into relief headquarters at 420 Lexington Avenue included a check for $1,000 from Sonja Henie, Norwegian screen star. At the Finnish Consulate it was reported that about $10,000 had been contributed to the Finnish Red Cross and $20,000 to a general relief fund.
