Incumbent politicians dominated Wyoming's primary election Aug 21. Sen. Alan Simpson, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, overwhelmed two challengers by winning about 88 percent of the votes cast.

Kathy Helling, a political newcomer, won the Democratic Senate primary.

Gov. Mike Sullivan, a lawyer and petroleum engineer who in 1986 extended the Democrats' hold on the governorship to four terms, easily defeated challenger Ron Clingman.

Governor Sullivan's opponent in November will be Jackson rancher Mary Mead, who defeated five-term Casper legislator Nyla Murphy.

Rep. Craig Thomas, who won a special election last April to fill the seat vacated by Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, and Democratic challenger Pete Maxfield were both unopposed in the US House primaries.
