Mecham's Comeback Hopes Dashed in Arizona Primary

TEN states and the District of Columbia held primary elections Sept. 11. Among the results: Arizona Millionaire businessman Fife Symington won the Republican nomination for governor of Arizona Tuesday, ending the comeback hopes of the impeached Gov. Evan Mecham.

Mr. Symington will face Democrat Terry Goddard, a former Phoenix mayor, in the general election.

Connecticut Rep. Bruce Morrison won the Democratic nomination for governor, defeating state Rep. William Cibes Jr. in the party's first gubernatorial primary in 12 years. Mr. Morrison faces Rep. John Rowland, the Republican nominee, and former GOP Sen. Lowell Weicker Jr., now an independent, in the race to replace outgoing Gov. William O'Neill.

Maryland Democratic Gov. William Donald Schaefer easily won renomination.

In a closely watched congressional race, Rep. Roy Dyson won renomination in a Democratic primary over state legislator Barbara Kreamer and two others. Mr. Dyson will face Republican Wayne Gilchrest, who narrowly lost to Dyson in 1988 and defeated seven opponents for the GOP nomination.

Minnesota Democratic Gov. Rudy Perpich defeated a former cabinet member in his fourth bid for governor.

In the hotly contested Republican governor's primary race, party-endorsed Jon Grunseth, a conservative St. Paul businessman, defeated state Auditor Arne Carlson, who had been ahead nearly 2 to 1 in most polls.

Republican Sen. Rudy Boschwitz easily defeated John Zeleniak to win the Senate primary.

New Hampshire Anti-abortion GOP Congressman Bob Smith and former Democratic Sen. John Durkin won primary victories in the race for the seat of retiring Sen. Gordon Humphrey (R).

Gov. Judd Gregg breezed through the GOP primary, and will face either former state Democratic party chairman Joseph Grandmaison or Senate minority leader Robert Preston, who were running neck and neck.

New York Carol Bellamy, the former New York City Council president turned Wall Street investment banker, won a lopsided victory over Westchester County Clerk Andrew Spano in the Democratic primary for state comptroller. Ms. Bellamy will challenge Republican three-term incumbent Edward Regan in November.

Rhode Island Millionaire business leader Bruce Sundlun handily defeated two mayors in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, setting up his third consecutive race against Republican Gov. Edward DiPrete.

Utah former state Rep. Genevieve Atwood and former state Sen. Karl Snow easily captured Republican nominations Tuesday in Utah's primary election for Congress. Ms. Atwood will face eight-year Rep. Wayne Owens (D), Independent Party candidate Larry Topham, and Eleanor Garcia of the Socialist Workers Party in the November general election.

Mr. Snow will face Democrat Bill Orton, Robert Smith of the American Party, and Anthony Dutrow of the Socialist Workers Party. The winner will replace retiring GOP Rep. Howard Nielson.

Vermont Former Gov. Richard Snelling won the GOP primary and will face Democrat Peter Welch. They are vying to replace Gov. Madeleine Kunin, who is retiring after three terms.

Washington, D.C. Jesse Jackson appeared headed for an easy victory in a Democratic primary for one of two new ``shadow'' lobbying posts to the United States Senate, his first run for elected office other than that of president.

Sharon Pratt Dixon, apparently riding a wave of resentment against the political establishment, was headed for an upset victory over veteran City Council member John Ray in the Democratic mayoral primary.

Former District of Columbia police chief Maurice Turner was unopposed in the Republican primary, and will face the Democratic nominee in the race to succeed outgoing Mayor Marion Barry.

Wisconsin Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson easily won renomination.
