IBM BUILDS FASTEST COMPUTER CHIP

International Business Machines Corporation announced yesterday that it has built the world's fastest high-capacity memory chip. The experimental chip, called Static Random Access Memory, can send or receive 8 billion bits of information per second.

The chip can ``read'' individual bits of information in 4 billionths of a second. It can ``read'' and ``write'' successive bits of information in just 2 billionths of a second.
