NONALIGNED COUNTRIES TO LAUNCH PEACE MISSIONS

The foreign ministers of 15 ``nonaligned'' countries agreed at talks in Belgrade Tuesday to undertake peace missions to Iraq and the United States. The missions would explore ways to end the Gulf war. The foreign ministers said a three- or four-member team would leave for Baghdad within days and envoys would be dispatched to Washington afterward. But they did not come up with a formal peace plan during the Belgrade talks.

Officials at the Belgrade meeting said they would strive for peace, even if the chances of success were slim. It was a time for action, not declarations of peace plans, they said.

The countries represented included Yugoslavia, Algeria, Egypt, and India. The so-called nonaligned movement represents countries that do not want to be allied to any superpower.
