When workers last year began digging up Michaeler Platz, as part of a minor reconstruction project, they found Roman ruins. This is but one reminder of Vienna's ancient history.
1st century BC: Roman soldiers build a military camp they call "Vindobona'.
1278: Hapsburg rule begins.
1700s: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert live in city.
Late 1800s: Ringstrasse boulevard created.
1918: Collapse of Hapsburg dynasty and Austro-Hungarian Empire.
1938: Adolf Hitler enters triumphantly on March 15.
1945: Vienna divided by allies until 1955, when Austria is united as neutral state.
1980s: City launches Danube cleanup.
